Cheeseburger Pie

This recipe combines all of the cheesy goodness you would get in a regular cheeseburger and it’s ready within 45 minutes! A classic in the past, this recipe is oh-so-comforting and piled with ground beef and sharp cheddar cheese. Top with your favorite burger toppings to create a deluxe cheeseburger pie!

Many recipes out there make this recipe with Bisquick, however, I feel it’s a little unnecessary. I’m unsure if it’s typically made like that, but I like my way better. You get more of the cheeseburger taste and less biscuit. The Bisquick just seems to take away some flavor. I used a pie crust because you can’t have a pie without a pie crust! All you need to do is brown the ground beef with the onions, mix it up with breadcrumbs, egg, and cheese, pour it into the pie crust, and bake! It’s super simple to make this recipe and is loved by many home chefs because of its simplicity.

How to make Cheeseburger Pie

Think of this dish as a cross between a casserole and a quiche. Not quite eggy, and not quite casseroley. With classic cheeseburger ingredients like ground beef, cheddar cheese, and ketchup, it’s a simple, hearty, and flavorful meal that the whole family will enjoy. Even your pickiest kids will be asking for more! (Full ingredient amounts and complete instructions are available in the recipe card down below).

  • Ground Beef: This recipe works well with less lean ground beef. 80-20 works best.
  • Sweet Onion: To cut through the sharp cheese. You can use a regular yellow onion if you wish.
  • Garlic
  • Pie Crust: Plain pie crust is used. I used Pillsbury.
  • Ketchup & Dijon Mustard: To give the ground beef the full burger treatment. You can sub the dijon for yellow mustard. I love using dijon in recipes.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: I always throw this sauce in ground beef. Just adds a delicious umami flavor.
  • Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder, Oregano
  • Panko Breadcrumbs: This absorbs most liquid to moisten the pie.
  • Eggs: To bind the pie together.
  • Milk: You just need a little bit. If you decide to use non-dairy milk, remember that the taste will be different.
  • Sharp Cheddar Cheese:  I recommend shredding your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheese is coated with an anti-caking powder that prevents it from melting to its gooiest potential.
  • Toppings are Optional, but Recommended for the Deluxe Cheeseburger Pie: Bacon, Scallions, Red Onions, Pickles, Tomatoes, or Jalapenos.

Preheat the oven to 400F. Spray a 9-inch pie pan lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Line the pie pan with the pie crust. In a saute pan, start browning and breaking up the ground beef on medium-high heat. After 5 minutes of cooking the beef, add in the onions and cook for 5 minutes more, until the onions are just translucent. Add in the garlic and cook for a minute more. Drain the excess fat, then return to the saute pan. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, dijon mustard, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and oregano. Allow to cook for 2 minutes, then remove from the heat and pour the ground beef mixture into a large mixing bowl. Allow cooling slightly for 5 minutes. Add in the panko breadcrumbs and milk. Stir to combine, then quickly mix in the egg so it doesn’t cook. Add in half of the cheese and mix. Pour the ground beef mixture into the pie crust, then top with the remaining cheese. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is a golden color. Allow cooling for 10 minutes before cutting so the pie can be set.

Tips & FAQs

  • Add your toppings after baking. Allow the pie to cool, then place the toppings onto the pie. If you do end up baking it with the pie, take the pie out 10 minutes before, then place your toppings on top then sprinkle additional cheese for best results. Bake for the remaining time.
  • You can swap the ground beef for turkey, chicken, or venison.
  • Storage: You can store this pie for up to 4 days. Freezing: This can be frozen for up to 3 months. Allow the pie to cool completely before freezing. Thaw completely before reheating. To Reheat: Bake in the oven at 375F for 30 minutes or microwave for 4 minutes.
  • Variations: Swap the cheddar for pepper jack, feta, Colby, or mozzarella cheese. Add in some chopped jalapenos, cooked bacon, or even hot sauce. Swap the sweet onions for red onions.

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust, large enough to fit a 9-inch pie pan
  • 1 lb ground beef, 80%-20% fat
  • 1/2 large sweet onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F. Spray a 9-inch pie pan lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Line the pan with the pie crust. Cut off excess if necessary.
  2. In a skillet, start browning the ground beef. After 5 minutes of cooking, add in the onions and cook for 4-5 minutes more, until the onions are just translucent. Add in the garlic, stir and cook for a minute more. Drain the excess fat and return to the skillet.
  3. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and oregano. Cook for 2 minutes, then remove from the heat. Pour the ground beef mixture into a large mixing bowl. Allow to cool for 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the panko breadcrumbs and milk. Quickly stir in the egg so it doesn’t cook. Add in 1 cup of shredded cheese and mix. Pour the ground beef mixture into the pie crust, spreading to level it out. Top with the remaining cheese.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese on top is golden. Allow to cool for 10 minutes so the pie can be set before you cut into it. Top with your favorite burger toppings.
