Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks are a tasty snack that can be prepared and stored in the freezer! Any time you want a snack, just pop a few into the air fryer and within 5 minutes, you’ll have cheesy, stringy, and tasteful mozzarella!

My nephew came over and I was originally going to fry these in some fatty canola oil, but he brought up that maybe I should air fry them. I thought it was a good idea, as it’s healthier and takes about the same time. Before you fry these beauties, you want to freeze them before you air fry them. It keeps the stick from exploding into gooey cheese. It may do that, but it won’t be as bad of a mess. It’s much better to make these from scratch as opposed to buying frozen mozzarella sticks.
How to make Homemade Mozzarella Sticks
- Separate into 3 bowls flour, egg and milk, then breadcrumbs. You can season the breadcrumbs or buy Italian style breadcrumbs like I used.
- Dip each mozzarella stick into flour, egg-milk mixture, then the breadcrumbs. Dip back into the egg-milk mixture, & finally into the bread crumb mixture. Lay them on a baking sheet.
- Freeze prepared sticks for at least 30 minutes.
- Spray mozzarella sticks with vegetable spray oil. Place in a single layer air fry until crispy.
How to make this better:
You can try to experiment with different breadings. You can try panko which is a bit crispy in texture compared to Italian breadcrumbs. You can try potato chips for the saltiness. You can even season the breadcrumbs with some parmesan cheese, or you can do a cajun mozzarella stick with some cajun seasoning!
Tips for Mozzarella Sticks
- Choose your cheese wisely: Not all cheese sticks are created equally. I used a regular, full-fat mozzarella log. You can also make these with low-fat mozzarella, but the texture might be slightly rubbery. I cannot vouch for what will happen to nonfat mozzarella sticks.
- Freeze completely before air-frying: Make sure they are frozen before air frying-if they are even a tiny bit soggy in the freezer, they aren’t going to fry evenly. The coating will fall right off. The sticks should feel dry to the touch.
- Use nonstick spray: Hit the air fryer basket and sticks with some nonstick spray oil before you put them in the basket. This way they don’t stick to the basket, and a little extra oil helps them brown.
- Work in batches if you need to: The sticks might get stuck together if you pile them all in one spot. It’s better to give them a little space than to overcrowd them.
- If you have a toaster oven/air fryer combo: you may want to place an extra rack underneath the fry basket and line it with foil to prevent mozzarella from dripping onto the heating elements.
- Dip these in some marinara sauce!

How to freeze your sticks for later:
Make the batch like you would and leave them in the freezer until you’re ready to air fry them. Breaded, uncooked mozzarella sticks can be frozen for up to 6 months. They should go straight from the freezer to the air fryer without thawing!
Once air-fried, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer for about 3 minutes to re-crisp them.

Donate for my fur baby!
My cat is 17 years old. We took him to get groomed because he had a bunch of big knots on him and no matter how much I brushed him, they would never stay off him. When we picked him up, he was twitching and not responsive. He wasn’t his normal self. We took him to the ER and he was cold with no temperature reading, his blood sugar was low and he was having a seizure. The hospital was able to help him. I remember he was wrapped in towels and a hoodie because they were trying to warm him up. I was hysterical crying. I thought my fur baby was going to not survive and needed to pass on. I’m so glad he’s better, but his visit bill is about $400 USD, plus extra funds to run tests later to make sure it’s nothing serious. We need as much help as we can get. Please consider donating to help my fur baby. I don’t want to lose him. Not yet. Thank you!
